Terrapin Restaurant, Virginia Beach

Terrapin Restaurant, Virginia Beach

If you want a nice night out with quality food and service, Terrapin is a great choice.

This gem of a restaurant is tucked into a nondescript, somewhat isolated shopping center just off Larkin Road and adjacent to a Burger King.

Entering the parking lot and seeing the outside of this establishment, you would not think the menu and wine list would be as refined as it is.

In fact, one thing you can truly rely upon is the quality of the seafood at Terrapin.

In addition, Terrapin is regarded as one of the best options in the restaurant-thin North End of Virginia Beach.

Walking into the front entrance, you are immediately greeted by the hostess who asks to take your coat.

After making your reservation, your server is already prepared to know your name and any information you provide.

If you are a return customer, they know what you had before and make recommendations tailored specifically for you.

The starters and salads on the menu range from the classic beef tartare, with a twist, to the more eclectic foie gras torchon.

Similarly, there are always seasonal changes to the menu, but they keep favorites like their amazing truffle mac and cheese.

Terrapin does have a happy hour that allows diners to order their homemade pasta dishes at a thirty percent discount and some of their more popular starters for about half the regular price.

The only caveat here is that the restaurant can be expensive for Virginia Beach but so upscale it is clearly worth the extra bit of cash you will invest in a beautiful night out!

Tautog's Restaurant

Tautog’s Restaurant

Located less than a block from the beachfront hotels in Virginia Beach in an old Cape Cod, Tautog’s restaurant is one of the best seafood restaurants in Virginia Beach.

In fact, Tautog’s is what you call an original hole-on-the-wall kind of place.

Tautog’s Restaurant idea was developed to present clients with a unique eating experience that combines quality fish items with outstanding customer service.

Everything about Tautog is superb. The environment of a 1920’s house provides an inviting atmosphere.

Locals go there often, and the staff, who all look like they want to be there, know their regulars.

Likewise, the Chef here, Connor, uses the freshest local ingredients and uses them well. In fact, his seafood specials are based on what’s in the nearby waters at the time.

11. Le Yaca Virginia Beach

Le Yaca Virginia Beach

Le Yaca Virginia Beach

If you enjoy fine dining, then Ye Yaca is one of the best restaurants in Virginia Beach for you to go to.

Although billed as a French restaurant, it is so much more. They have a wide variety of food, and the fact that you can get a number of three-course dinners at a good price is a bonus.

Le Yaca began in 1964/65 in a little town in the French Alps. It was only a promising skiing destination when Gerard Gormier showed Daniele Bourderau a village house with a large fireplace given to him by his father.

Daniele Bourderau and Gerard believed it would be a good idea and location to operate a modest restaurant.

That was the start of what would become the first Le Yaca. Today, they have two locations, one in Williamsburg and another in Virginia.

Le Yaca Virginia Beach and its sister restaurant in Williamsburg are now some of the best restaurants in Virginia.

The restaurants have a lot of options for dinner. There are bar tables and a special “bistro” menu for the bar.

12. Yard House

Yard House, Va Beach

Yard House, Va Beach

If you’re going to Yard House, then you probably are looking for a variety of beers on tap, and that is what they offer best.

The Yard House is located in the upscale Virginia Beach Town Center, a beautiful location with restaurants, retail, a comedy club, offices and hotels, and free street parking.

As you walk in, you notice a wide expansive open area with a bar in the center. The bar has a plethora of beers on tap; you will almost feel like a kid in a candy store.

There are so many beers on tap, not to mention the ones that only come in bottles. It would definitely take some time to try everything, especially since they have a rotating stock on some of them.

The menu is pretty eclectic as well.

If you go, get the chicken tortilla soup, which is loaded with chicken and very flavorful.

All meats are lovely — the hamburgers are juicy, tasty, and cooked expertly; the sandwiches are stuffed and smartly assembled & presented.

You just have confidence in anything you wish to order, but ask your waitperson what’s trending. The waiters don’t have to “push” to sell you anything because it’ll be good no matter what you order, in my experience.

The wait staffs are also competent with their beer knowledge, but occasionally you’ll run into one that missed that day’s training.

Overall, the restaurant is a great place to go on a weekend night, to relax and hang out, or just to stop in for a beer after work.

Eat An American Bistro

An American Bistro

Eat is a small restaurant that doesn’t look like much from the Street, but it’s worth it to go in for food and drinks.

The quiet setting on the north end of the Virginia Beach oceanfront has become a local favorite.

This charming little restaurant could be easily passed by since its nondescript exterior at the front of an old condo building is small.

16. Zoes Steak & Seafood

Restaurants in Virginia Beach

Zoes Steak & Seafood

If you are searching for an intimate restaurant to celebrate a special occasion or enjoy being pampered by talented staff and a knowledgeable sommelier, find your way to Zoe’s.

Zoes first opened in 2003 and reopened on March 16, 2009, under new ownership.

Renowned sommelier Marc Sauter and loyal restaurant patrons Bill and Joni Greene now carry on the Zoes legacy with the same fantastic location, friendly staff, calming environment, and award-winning food and beverages.

While the Virginia Beach boardwalk area is considered a tourist destination, most of its top-name restaurants cater to large crowds and are noisy.

The menu is sparse, offering a few seafood dishes, steaks, salads, and one vegetarian dish. The portions are also sparse (quality above quantity).

The place is several blocks from the Beach in a fairly residential area, but don’t let that put you off.

The exterior is well-lit with rope lighting, and valet parking is available.

The interior lighting is subdued without being dark, and the furnishings are the traditional polished wood and plush upholstery.

Zoes offers 3, 4, and 5-course pairing menus, or you can order single appetizers and entrees to your liking.

Additionally, you can’t go wrong with the soft-shelled crabs as an appetizer or main course when in season. The tuna paella is also worth a try.

Restaurants in Virginia Beach

Hearth Wood Fired Cuisine & Craft Beer

Tucked away in a neighborhood a few blocks off the Beach is a real gem away from the crowds. Hearth is one of the best restaurants in Virginia Beach to grab some drinks.

If you are a fan of wood-fired pizza, then this is the place for you.

A little backstory; Owner Sam Caldow, who also owns Sam’s Raw Bar in Rudee Inlet, identified a need. More accurately, his consumers saw a need and asked him to provide it.

Customers continued asking for a finer eating alternative than Sam’s, which is about as Beach casual and divey as it gets, according to Sam.

A more upscale dining experience with a more complex cuisine specialized in craft beer. The trick is to make it feel comfortable and casual enough that you can wear good shorts, jeans, flops, or kicks.

When you drive up to Hearth, you will not be impressed. You may even doubt your decision to go here. But persevere! You will be a little more impressed when you walk in and even more impressed when you hear the specials and peruse the menu.

In fact, the rectangle single-story building provides no clues as to what you’re about to experience.

You will see an open kitchen with the pizza oven as the centerpiece and a small bar to your right with TVs and seating.

The menu is broken down by small, medium, and large plates and, of course, pizza which will not break the bank.

If pizza is not your thing, there is a huge bar and a large backroom with tons of seating and tables and booths. So grab some drinks.

The burgers here are all wonderful, and the mac ‘n cheese side order is awesome.

Restaurants in Virginia Beach

Shaking Crab Virginia Beach

Looking to try some tasty seafood with a touch of Nawlins – Cajun flavor while in Virginia Beach? Then this is your place.

The Shaking Crab serves seafood prepared in the flavorful New Orleans Cajun style.

You pick what you want from the menu, and they serve it to you in a big bag full of yummy seafood flavor! Whether it’s shrimp, Crab, corn on the cob, sausage, etc., they toss it all in a bag for you.

Don’t wear your suit or cocktail dress; this will be a messy but enjoyable affair.

Pro tip- bring a pair of scissors and cut the bag off under the knot. OR fold it down like a cuff on pants.

You’ll still get messy, but not all the way to the elbows. They provide bibs, tools, forks, and wet naps.

Make sure to pull the arms away from the bibs at the bottom first, then the top. They are plastic and will rip easily. You will have to ask for cocktail sauce if you want it- they did provide butter.

Overall, this place is for you if you like Crab, shrimp, fried oysters, hush-puppies, corn, or taters.

Upon entering, you will see the bar that probably seats around ten and additional seating in front.

There’s also a cool waiting area in the corner with red velvet chairs.

The Chef’s touch makes the dishes here distinctive compared to all the other spots in Virginia Beach.

Don’t be afraid to dress up a bit for this place, for you will not stand out in the crowd. The cost is a bit on the pricey side for the high-end entrees, but the value seemed just right for the location.

There’s a select short main course menu with various meats and seafood: steak, lamb, duck, chicken, salmon, shrimp, and scallops.

The Bee and the Biscuit

If you are looking for a brunch type of place in the Pungo area of Virginia Beach, this place is worth checking out.

The building is a charming house that has been made into a restaurant, so you feel like you are at your Aunt’s or Grandmother’s house eating breakfast.

They have a varied and interesting menu, including many different ways to serve biscuits.

There is a wait, but they make it very convenient to do so. Scenic seating while you wait is everywhere, in lovely shaded pergolas or in the sun during cooler times.

And the best part is you can order cocktails from the outdoor tiki-style bar while waiting. However, once you’re seated, you can enjoy what you waited so long for.

The menu is a variety of breakfast entrees offering a variety of Benedicts, pancakes, and waffle options.

The menu also offers some awesome sandwiches. Both options are available until the restaurant closes.

You should try the biscuit here; it is nicely baked with a slightly crunchy crust and soft throughout. However, they are big, so you might want to split them with another person, especially since the portions of the meals are also fairly large.

In addition to the exquisite menu, there is an outdoor bar in the waiting area with coffee and tea, cocktails, and mocktails.

They also have a small gift shop with merchandise from the restaurant, plus some bee-related items from local artisans.

The lunch menu includes a delicious vegan burger! In addition, they have several sides that are vegan options.

If you want something just for one, get the steak, but if you don’t mind sharing, get a burger because it is well big.
