The adobe home of E. F. Sanguinetti, built in the 19th-century, is nothing less than charming. And to see its location in the heart of the historic Yuma goers further to buttress his extraordinary legacy.

Eugene Francis Sanguinetti, “Merchant Prince of Yuma,” was born in Coulterville, California, on May 16, 1867. He, however, visited Yuma just at age 16, where he lived until he died in 1945.

In his lifetime, he accomplished some feats, one of them being the building of this tower surrounded by elegant gardens. He was a vast businessman and impacted Yuma in his days.

The Sanguinetti House Museum and Gardens is actually a Victorian-style house that showcases the architecture, design, and artifacts from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century.

The house is tucked away in the downtown area and surrounded by elegant gardens. Over time, the original adobe house of merchant E.F. Sanguinetti now serves as a museum exhibiting his life.

Have you ever imagined what prisons looked like in the 1800s?

The Yuma’s Territorial Prison State Historic Park gives you a great feeling of that physical and creates that visual image in your mind.

You would most certainly want to see the old holding cells and those creepy dark rooms.

The prison is no longer in use, but its memories live on even in the minds of much younger generations.

The infamous prison, which began operation in 1876, was built by its initial group of prisoners.

It’s located across the bank of the Colorado River, and with the desert surrounding it, it shows added caution against jailbreaks that were common at the time.

The stone and metal structure of the prison now hovers over the Ocean-to-Ocean bridge (another historic landmark of the city).

However, the prison was in operation for 33 years, and it recorded 3,069 prisoners – 29 of them were women. 111 inmates died while serving, though no one was executed during the period.

The Yuma Territorial Prison is a part of the historical Old South West and was shut down for overcrowding in the year 1907

At the park, there are many types of artifacts on display. There are exhibits with artifacts like old uniforms and weapons used by guards and prisoners during operations.

This place is open to tourists thanks to Yuma’s Chain Gang organizers, who raised enough money to have the prison restored and brought back to life when it was facing closure.

Besides, the prison serves as one of the last living reminders of Yuma’s history in the Old West till today and can be visited for a small fee.

Photo: Castle Dome Mine Museum & Ghost Town

One of the best things to do in Yuma is to pay a visit to the castle dome mine town, which is also known as a ghost town.

The then buzzing mining town in 1878 was the remains of an abandoned and empty settlement.

The castle dome town was the location of the early miners who made a fortune from mining gold, copper, and silver.

However, today, the ghost town, as it is called now, is surrounded by mountains and looks frozen in time, although some structures still preserve the Old West’s history.

It has been deserted for over 20 years ago, and it has been left that way, untouched by the hands of modern technology.

Additionally, below the soils of this town reside over 300 mines, all of which have been explored, and the artifacts have been brought to fill the museums.

One of the main reasons the Castle Dome Mine Museum is a must-see attraction is its historical significance.

The museum was created by Walter and Helen Schott, who had a strong interest in preserving the mining history in the area.

In this town, you would see original structures like the church building, the five saloons, the boardwalks, and the stamp mill. You can also visit the original boiler, the mills, and many other attractions here.

Visitors can also explore an authentic mine tunnel, use a gold pan to look for gold, and take a tour of a recreated miner’s cabin.

Things to do in Yuma

Facebook / Martha’s Gardens Date Farm

In 1990, Nels and Martha Rogers put their hands to serious work by creating an oasis out of rough desert land, Martha’s Gardens Date Farm.

It stretches about 10 miles of the desert with 8,000 date palms.

Today, it is one of the largest date farms in Yuma, spanning an area of 130 acres. There is also a mega store of Medjool date palms.

This singular farm has made Yuma (and Arizona in extension) very popular.

It is, however, not surprising, seeing that Yuma holds the credit of being the sunniest place in the world, and date palms need continuous sunshine for proper growth.

Let’s quickly refresh your memory and remind you that 1992 marked the beginning of the date industry in the United States.

As a matter of fact, Walter Swingle, a USDA scientist, brought 11 shoots of dates to Nevada from the African country, Morocco. So, the whole palms in America originated from these shoots.

You should definitely see them yourself, and also get their famous date shake from their farm or even other products. Check it out, you’ll love it!

This has brought about a tremendous increase in the population of birds and wildlife, with estimation tipping it to provide habitat for over 330,000 species.

The project is an essential environmental project in Yuma.

East Wetlands has been designated by the US Fish and Wildlife Service as a mitigation site to help make up for wetlands lost by agricultural development.

28. Kofa National Wildlife Refuge

Kofa National Wildlife Refuge

The Kofa National Wildlife Refuge established in 1939 is 665,400 acres of desert, which is the home to the California Fan Palm (the only truly native Arizonan palm tree).

Here you have the opportunity to see some notable wild animals such as foxes, badgers, desert tortoises, kit foxes, and the desert bighorn sheep (this is the major popular attraction and is the largest herd in the Southwest), deer, and rabbits.

Bird species you would also observe at Kofa include the American kestrel, cactus wren, cougar, northern flicker, Say’s phoebe, orange-crowned warbler, phainopepla, and the white-winged dove.

Also, the existence of a variety of plants attracts botany enthusiasts to the refuge. They include the special Kofa Mountain barberry (a plant found only in Southwestern Arizona).

You’re always certain to find something to do given the large expanse of land available. One bit of a disappointment for you may be the lack of camping areas in the park, but it wouldn’t count as there is a “Leave No Trace” guideline.

My little advice for you before you leave is that you come with a high clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle, so you can navigate a couple of rough spots in the area.

29. Yuma Proving Ground Heritage Center

Yuma Proving Ground Heritage Center

Yuma Proving Ground Heritage Center

The Heritage Center offers a great presentation of modern warfare and a very educational tour of the work at the Yuma Proving Grounds.

The hard work, courage, and patience of those who have worked here have gone on to impact history and the world from the early 1950s to now.

Here you can walk around the grounds and get up close to tanks and other military vehicles.

The men at the Center are very knowledgeable and informative.

There are also many rooms to walk through and stories to read, so make sure you give yourself enough time.

This is a great place! You can get a permit to go to the museum on the base.

If you’re wondering what to do in the Yuma area, please put this on your list!

30. Mittry Lake Wildlife Area

Mittry Lake Wildlife Area

The Mittry Lake

It’s the Mittry Lake!. Drop in your kayak, canoe, no-wake boat, or tube, experience the delightful water experience, and also get some fishing in here.

There are camping spots here (14-day BLM limit applies).

There are also tons of hiking trails and even covered seating.

Mittry Lake is out of the way and doesn’t see a lot of traffic. It’s a good spot to spend a couple of nights in the RV or in a tent, and it sure is peaceful.

This lake is part of the Colorado River system, where there’s a light discharge from Imperial Dam pools behind Laguna Dam before making its way to Mexico.

The resulting slow water is a haven for bluegill, catfish, and bass.

To enjoy this place to the fullest, be sure to have your fishing license, your fishing gear, and your river stamps!
